CSO Royal Nedalco / C5 Yeast Company

In the position at C5 Yeast Company (previously part of Royal Nedalco, then a separate company, and subsequently integrated within DSM), research was in the optimization of production of bioethanol from second generation feedstocks. Key elements were (genetically-modified) yeast in alcohol production, pretreatment of feedstocks and the application of enzymes that degrade polymeric sugar compounds such as (hemi)cellulose and pectin. Patent applications (5) and papers resulted. Importantly, the R&D work allowed fruitful interactions with companies world-wide that were interested in licensing and applying the technologies developed.
